Zagat readers vote Waterside Inn best restaurant in London area

Three-Michelin-starred French restaurant The Waterside Inn has been named the top restaurant in the London area for the second year in a row by Zagat readers.

For the 2014 edition of the crowd-sourced restaurant guide to London, chef Alain Roux’s “unashamedly French” restaurant in Bray -- also the longest-running restaurant to hold three Michelin stars in Britain -- received the top score in the food category amongst Zagat diners.

It also tied London eateries The Ledbury, Le Gavroche and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay for scoring the highest marks in service.

The Waterside Inn has become an institution in fine dining throughout its 40-year-existence along the banks of the Thames. Menus change seasonally and diners can choose dishes from the establishment's à la carte menu or the multi-course Menu Exceptionnel, a showcase of the week’s top dishes.

At the time of writing, the fall menu included dishes such as lobster salad served with a citrus jelly, raspberry vinaigrette; roasted venison loin in a pastry crust with wild mushrooms, broccoli florets, Hermitage wine sauce and blackcurrant vinegar and a warm golden plum soufflé.

The Menu Exceptionnel is priced at £153 (about US$240).

On a 30-point scale, food at the Waterside Inn averaged a top score of 29 among diners. Ratings between 26 and 30 denote cuisine that’s “extraordinary to perfection.”

Reviewers raved about the inn, saying it’s “worth le voyage” for its romantic, peaceful setting and “exquisite” dishes.

Meanwhile, Zagat results come a week after The Good Food Guide 2014 proclaimed Simon Rogan’s Cartmel restaurant L’Enclume the best in Britain.

Other top winners in the 2014 Zagat edition include Yashin Sushi in Kensington, which was ranked among the top restaurants for food in London; The Wolseley in the category of most popular; and Sketch - The Lecture Room & Library for top decor.

The 2014 edition covered 1,290 eateries in the London area and included reviews from 10,271 diners.
