Singapore's economy returned to growth in July-September, reversing contraction in the previous three months, owing to a pick-up in the city-state's key manufacturing sector, the government said on Tuesday.

However, officials estimate the economy grew 2.4 percent year on year, which is below analysts' forecasts of 2.8 percent.

Singapore footballer Baihakki Khaizan has hit out against the management of the country's new Sports Hub in an Instagram post on Monday.

The 30-year-old national defender, a veteran member of the Lions team for over a decade, described Singapore's billion-dollar Sports Hub as “all fancy”, with “all the bells and whistles”, but said he missed the old one that churned out its sporting champions. Others echoed his sentiments as well, ahead of the Brazil-Japan friendly match to be played on Tuesday night.

A group of researchers at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University have developed a new lithium-ion battery that charges exponentially faster than existing ones that power all manner of electronic devices, from cars to phones.

The fast-charging next generation lithium-ion batteries, expected to hit the market in two years' time, also have a long lifespan of 20 years, helping to cut down waste generated by disposed batteries.
