NTC forces take control of Sirte university

Forces loyal to Libya's new regime on Sunday took control of Sirte's university, one of the main bastions of Moamer Kadhafi's loyalists in his hometown, an AFP correspondent reported. "We have taken the university... we have liberated the area from Kadhafi's dogs," National Transitional Council commander Nasser Zamud said, as hundreds of his fighters roamed the campus. "The fighting has been difficult; there were a lot of snipers," Zamud said of the assault on the university in the Mediterranean city's southeast. Fighting has been raging around the university and the nearby Ouagadougou conference centre since the NTC forces launched on Friday what they are calling their final assault on Sirte. On Sunday morning, the NTC combatants were finally able to enter the university and its new campus, a huge construction site where Kadhafi snipers had been picking them off from unfinished buildings. But fighting was still raging for the conference centre, an enormous rectangular building and its concrete bunkers, a key base for the pro-Kadhafi forces.
