Responses to offensive online posts should be ‘mature, calm’: PM Lee

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has called for calmness and maturity among Singaporeans when responding to racially or religiously-sensitive posts online, reported Today.

Speaking for the first time on recent incidents that have pushed the issue into the spotlight on Sunday, Lee emphasised the need for Singaporeans to avoid getting riled up at every sensitive case that occurs.

“We have to respond in a mature and calm way,” he was quoted as saying. “It’s wrong that they did it and we acted against them, but it’s not necessary for us to get worked up every time something like this happens.

“It will happen once in awhile and we will have to take it in our stride,” he added.

Over the past month, three incidents of racially-sensitive online posts have surfaced, these involving former Young People’s Action Party member Jason Neo, blogger Donaldson Tan and national serviceman Christian Eliab Ratnam.

All three cases are currently being investigated.

The paper also reported that the prime minister was speaking to reporters on the side of this year’s Mosque Convention, commenting that he was glad to see many young professionals in active participation in mosque activities.
