SINGAPORE — About $247,000 worth of drugs were seized and eight drug offenders arrested during a Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) operation on Wednesday (22 May).

In a media release on Thursday, the CNB said the drugs seized included about 2,793g of heroin and 519g of methamphetamine – also known as “Ice”.

The suspects, aged 36 to 61, comprise seven Singaporeans and one stateless person. Investigations against all eight suspects are ongoing.

Pre-dawn operation

During the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday, CNB officers were deployed in the Chai Chee Road area to observe a group of drug offenders.

Two male suspects, aged 36 and 52, were spotted arriving in the vicinity by car and a 51-year-old male – the stateless suspect – was then seen boarding the vehicle. He shortly exited the car and returned to his hideout, after which the car left the area.

Officers then raided the 51-year-old’s fourth-floor hideout and arrested him along with three other suspects in the unit: a 41-year-old female and two males, aged 59 and 61. The 51-year-old’s bedroom was found to contain about 656g of heroin and 2,379g of tobacco laced with new psychoactive substances (NPS).

About 710g of heroin was found in the unit’s living room, while a small about of “Ice” and heroin were found on the 59-year-old male and 41-year-old female.

Suspects’ vehicle intercepted

CNB officers who were tailing the car observed at Chai Chee Road later intercepted the vehicle along Tampines Avenue 10.

The 52-year-old male driver and 36-year-old male passenger were both arrested. About 1,419g of heroin and 513g of “Ice” were recovered from the vehicle.

Small amounts of heroin and “Ice” were also found in the driver’s hideout on Sumang Lane, where another two male suspects – aged 40 and 55 – were arrested. A motorcycle thought to belong to the 36-year-old suspect was also searched and small amounts of heroin and “Ice” as well as an ‘Ecstasy’ tablet were recovered.

According to the CNB, 2,793g of heroin is enough to feed the addition of about 1,330 abusers for a week. Meanwhile, 519g of “Ice” is sufficient to feed the addiction of about 296 abusers for a week.
