After a week of opening its recruitment process for the new Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) volunteer corps programme, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said it has received more than 200 applications.

In a post on Facebook on Sunday, Ng said the response was “encouraging”. He noted 60 per cent of the applicants are Singapore citizens, while 40 per cent of them are permanent residents, with a quarter of them being women.

Man dies in fire at Telok Blangah HDB flat

A 77-year-old man died of burns, while two of his neighbours were sent to hospital with breathing difficulties, after a fire at the man’s flat in Telok Blangah Crescent on Monday morning.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the fire, which took place on the eighth floor of Block 3, Telok Blangah Crescent at around 7:15am.

Singapore theatre director Ivan Heng invited to state banquet with Queen Elizabeth II

Acclaimed Singapore theatre director and actor Ivan Heng and his husband Tony Trickett have been invited to a banquet at Buckingham Palace in London hosted by Queen Elizabeth II herself.

Heng shared an image of the royal invitation on his Facebook page, which he said he received just 12 days after he and longtime partner Trickett got married in the Chelsea Old Town Hall in London on 1 August this year. Heng married his long-time partner in England after it passed a law recognising same-sex marriages in 2013.
