Construction of two more TEL stations begins

Construction works for the Mount Pleasant and Stevens MRT stations on the Thomas-East Coast Line (TEL) has started.

The two stations are part of Stage 3 of the TEL which are set to open by 2021.

However, residents can look forward to a new underpass two years ahead of the opening of TEL. Built under the Bukit Timah Canal, the underpass will connect Singapore Chinese Girls School with Stevens MRT station (pictured).

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the two TEL stations on 24 January, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said the underpass will allow students and residents to have a more comfortable and safer alternative to cross the busy Dunearn Road and Bukit Timah Road.

The 60-metre long underpass will be one of the first in Singapore to be built using a box jack rectangular tunnel boring machine.

As for Mount Pleasant MRT station, it will cater to staff and students at Catholic Junior College as well as the residents of new developments around the Old Police Academy.

However, certain portions of the Old Police Academy will be torn down to make way for the station.
