COVID-19: 7 new cases detected in Singapore
SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) has confirmed the detection of seven new cases of COVID-19 infection in Singapore as of noon on Sunday (18 October), taking the country’s total to 57,911.
One of the cases is from the community, while another resides at a migrant worker dormitory. The remaining five new cases are imported and have all been placed on Stay-Home Notice (SHN) since their arrival in Singapore, said MOH.
The sole community case (Case 58073) was “detected under our enhanced community testing to test all individuals aged 13 and above who are diagnosed with acute respiratory infection (ARI) at first presentation to a doctor”, the ministry said. The 40-year-old Bangladesh man is a technician but had not gone to work after onset of symptoms. His serological test result came back positive, which indicates likely past infection.
The other locally-transmitted case is a worker residing in a dormitory. “He was detected through our biweekly Rostered Routine Testing of workers living in dormitories,” the MOH said.
Among the five imported cases, four are currently employed in Singapore. Of these, two (Cases 58071 and 58072) are work permit holders who arrived from the Philippines and another two (Cases 58074 and 58075) are work pass holders who arrived from Greece and France. The remaining case (Case 58070) is a student’s pass holder who arrived from Guatemala. They had all been placed on SHN upon arrival in Singapore and were tested while serving SHN, the MOH said.
Overall, the number of new cases in the community has remained stable at an average of fewer than one case per day in the past two weeks. The number of unlinked cases in the community has also remained stable at an average of fewer than one case per day in the past two weeks.
99% of total cases have recovered; none in ICU
With nine more patients discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities on Sunday, 57,807 cases – or 99.8 per cent of the total – have fully recovered from the infection.
Most of the 40 hospitalised cases are stable or improving, while none is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
A total of 36 patients with mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive are isolated and cared for at community facilities.
Apart from 28 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four, whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.
