From December, Haw Par Villa will be closed for three months to undergo repair works.

In a statement on Tuesday (27 November), the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said that the theme park would be closed from 1 December to 28 February. “To ensure public safety, the entire park will be closed temporarily during this period,” it said.

The park will reopen for free public access on 1 March 2019.

Haw Par Villa was built in 1937 by Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par, the two Burmese brothers who invented the herbal ointment Tiger Balm.

The two philanthropists built Haw Par Villa as a way of preserving Chinese culture. The park contains over a thousand statues and dioramas depicting Chinese mythology and folklore.

The park is a key element in the documentary The Last Artisan, about Haw Par Villa’s last surviving original craftsman, 84-year-old Teo Veoh Seng.

Produced by American film lecturer Craig McTurk, The Last Artisan will premiere at the Singapore International Film Festival on 5 December.
