Last 3 men involved in rape, sexual assault of teen in Duxton Hotel in 2014 get jail, caning
SINGAPORE — Three young men who took turns to rape and sexually assault a drunk teen in a hotel room in 2014 were on Wednesday (August 14) sentenced to jail and caning.
The trio, who are now 25, were part of a group of five who preyed on the 18-year-old unconscious victim on 26 January 2014 at the now defunct Duxton Hotel. All three had claimed trial to their charges.
Ridhaudin Ridhwan Bakri, a dispatch driver, was jailed for 13 years, one month and 13 days, along with 13 strokes of the cane. He had been found guilty of one charge each of rape, sexual assault by penetration and molestation.
Muhammad Faris Ramlee, a driver, was jailed for 11 years, 10 months and 18 days, along with six strokes for the cane. He had been convicted of one count of rape but was acquitted of one charge of sexual assault by penetration.
Asep Ardiansyah, who is unemployed, was jailed for nine years, 11 months and 28 days, along with eight strokes of the cane. He had been found guilty of one count each of sexual assault by penetration and attempted rape.
The other two men who were part of the group had pleaded guilty to rape and were sentenced in July 2016.
Muhammad Fadly Abdull Wahab, who was a friend of the victim, was jailed for 13 years, along with eight strokes of the cane.
Muhammad Hazly Mohamad Halimi was jailed for 11 years, along with six strokes of the cane.
About the case
On 25 January 2014, Fadly invited the victim to a birthday party at the hotel. She brought along a male friend.
At about 10.45pm, Fadly and Hazly exchanged text messages while making their way to the venue. Fadly told Hazly that he wanted to get the victim drunk.
Hazly then told Fadly to buy an extra bottle of alcohol and the latter brought another bottle of vodka to the hotel.
The victim and her friend reached the hotel just after midnight on 26 January 2014. They drank together with the five perpetrators and a few others.
Fadly began plying the victim with alcohol. He poured her three half-filled plastic cups of hard liquor which she drank. He then gave her three cups of vodka that were mixed with Redbull to drink.
She was too drunk when some in the group decided to go to a nightclub. Fadly and Hazly volunteered to stay behind to look after her.
The duo brought her to the toilet and helped her to vomit before placing her on the bed, by which time she was unconscious.
The two men took a photo of the victim while she was partially undressed. Fadly then sent the photo to a friend, bragging about the fun he was having.
At about 2.30am, after helping the victim to vomit again, Fadly carried her to the bed and raped her as she lay unconscious.
Afterwards, he told Hazly to try his luck with the victim and he too raped her.
The victim was then left unconscious on the bed.
Asep returned to the room at about 3.45am, followed by Ridhaudin and Faris who came back some 10 minutes later.
Faris and Asep helped the victim to the bathroom as she was vomiting. Asep then left, leaving Faris in the bathroom, where he raped her.
Asep returned 20 minutes later and sexually assaulted and attempted to rape the victim.
The woman then found herself back on the bed where she felt Ridhaudin trying to penetrate her from the back.
Although she shook her head from left to right to show she did not consent to this, she was too weak to fight his advances. Ridhaudin then sexually assaulted and raped her.
The maximum punishment for rape is up to 20 years’ jail, along with a fine and caning.
Asep is out on bail pending an appeal against conviction.
