A 26-year-old man was charged in court on Monday (7 May) for jumping onto a private-hire car outside popular nightlife spot St James Power Station over the weekend.

Chee Chu Siong was arrested for committing a rash act after police received a complaint at about 3am on Saturday about a man who ran towards a moving car and jumped onto the car bonnet.

Chee, who was in police custody, is currently out on $5,000 bail.

A dashcam video of the incident posted on Facebook by the driver’s son shows a man dressed in black running towards the private hire car as the vehicle approaches him near the Envy Dance Club. As the vehicle stops, the man then jumps onto its bonnet and steps on its windshield before disappearing off-screen.

According to the post, the driver drove off from the scene at Blk 3 Sentosa Gateway after the incident because he feared for his safety and wanted to avoid a confrontation.

On Sunday night, the driver’s son posted a note on Facebook thanking members of the public for helping to track down the perpetuator. “With the closure of this episode, I hope we can all put this behind us and move on,” he wrote.

Chee will be back in court on 24 May.

The maximum penalty for committing a rash act is a jail term of up to six months, a fine of up to $2,500 or both.
