The Met Gala is a big night for the stars — and not just because of the fashion.

From on-the-carpet costume changes to engagement announcements and baby bump reveals, celebrities often use fashion's biggest night to make a statement — sartorial or otherwise. And it's become one of the most important nights of the year for our favorite celebrities to reveal another thing that everyone is dying to know (besides who they're wearing): their relationship statuses.

But are celebrity couples who make their red carpet debut at the Met Gala doomed? It's possible: these 13 famous pairs made the Met Gala red carpet their first together, only to break up not long after.

Kim Kardashian & Pete Davidson

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson first sparked relationship rumors in October 2021 when around Halloween, the pair was seen holding hands on a ride at Knott's Scary Farm.

While the couple's first official red carpet was technically at the 2022 White House Correspondent's Dinner, the pair made their wildly buzzy Met Gala red carpet debut together not long after, in May 2022.

That Gala was also the one at which Kardashian sparked controversy for wearing one of Marilyn Monroe's most iconic dresses — the "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" dress — that the Gentleman Prefer Blondes actress wore to sing "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy in 1962. For his part, Davidson let his love shine at the event, showering Kardashian in kisses and helping her navigate the famed Met Gala stairs in the super-delicate dress.

On Aug. 5, 2023, however, PEOPLE confirmed that Kardashian and Davidson had parted ways, with a source citing their "busy schedules" as a reason for the split.

The Kyle Cosmetics beauty mogul and rapper were on and off for much of their nearly five-year relationship.

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott first announced that they were taking a relationship break in 2019 after making their red carpet debut at the 2018 Met Gala.

The pair continued to date on and off, attending events, co-parenting their daughter Stormi together, and even having a second child, son Aire, together in 2022 before sources confirmed that they had split up again in 2023.

Hailey Bieber & Shawn Mendes

While Shawn Mendes and Hailey Bieber attended the Met Gala together, they never fully established their relationship status.

The singer stepped out at the 2018 Gala with Bieber (then Baldwin) on his arm, causing fans to wonder if they were possibly making their red carpet debut as a couple (though they were both guests of designer Tommy Hilfiger that night, Mendes later told PEOPLE).

Mendes later clarified the pair's relationship in an interview with Rolling Stone.

"I think it was more of a zone of limbo," Mendes said in the interview. "She's still one of the f---king coolest people ever — she's not just a beautiful person visually, but she's one of the most beautiful hearts I've ever met. I think I'm an idiot to not, you know … But you can't control your heart."

The 2018 Met Gala might just have been the catalyst for the end of the IRL "Bughead."

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse — who met while playing lovers on-screen in the CW drama Riverdale and dated in real life for nearly three years — made their Met Gala debut in 2018, confirming what fans had been speculating for some time.

The pair went on to date for two more years afterward, with Sprouse calling the relationship "as real as it gets" in an interview with GQ after the couple's 2020 split.

Grimes & Elon Musk

SpaceX founder Elon Musk and Canadian electronic singer-songwriter Grimes were first linked as a couple when they made their appearance at the 2018 Met Gala.

In a Vanity Fair interview in 2022, Grimes revealed that she and Musk were back together after a 2021 breakup. In the interview, Grimes called the relationship "very fluid."

However, the same day that the Vanity Fair story was released, Grimes posted to Twitter (now X) to say that the pair's relationship status had changed since the interview.

"Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article haha, but he's my best friend and the love of my life, and my life and art are forever dedicated to The Mission now, I think Devin wrote that part of the story rly well. Sique - peace out," she wrote.

The pair have three children together, X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræ and Techno Mechanicus.

Jennifer Lopez & Alex Rodriguez

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez had a history of making moments on the Met Gala red carpet.

The newly minted couple made their debut at the 2017 Met Gala, where Lopez stood out in a flowing mint-colored dress straight out of Old Hollywood.

Two years later the pair debuted another relationship milestone on the red carpet: their engagement! Lopez stood out again, but onlookers' eyes were only drawn to her 16-carat engagement ring.

In between these two events, the couple attended the Met Gala together again in 2018.

But the pair announced that they had called off their engagement in 2021, saying in a statement that they had "realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so."

Selena Gomez & The Weeknd

After meeting for the first time at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2015, where they both performed on the runway, Selena Gomez and The Weeknd were spotted a year later on a dinner date at Giorgio Baldi in L.A. — after the stars had split from their respective partners, Justin Bieber and Bella Hadid.

The singers made their relationship official on the red carpet at the 2017 Met Gala, one year after The Weeknd made his debut with Hadid.

In October, just five months after attending the Gala together, sources confirmed to PEOPLE that the pair had split.

Gigi Hadid & Zayn Malik

Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid — who share daughter Khai, now 4 — were an on-again/off-again couple from 2015 to 2021. The ex-One Directioner and the supermodel split officially in 2021 after Malik was accused of "striking" Hadid's mother, Yolanda Hadid.

But long before that, in the early stages of their relationship, the two walked the red carpet at the 2016 Met Gala, making their red carpet debut as a couple. The pair's outfits were complementary, both on point for the event's theme of "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology."

Anne Wojcicki & Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez is no stranger to gracing the Met Gala red carpet.

In 2016, the baseball player walked the red carpet with his then-girlfriend, 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki, reportedly arriving together in the same car as Wojcicki's ex, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, according to Vanity Fair.

The pair dated through 2016, but split up. The next year, Rodriquez was back at the Met sans Wojcicki, this time attending with J.Lo.

Robert Pattinson and FKA twigs, who began dating in 2014 and were engaged in 2015, ultimately split up in 2017 — but not until after they made their red carpet debut at the 2015 Met Gala.

Sources confirmed to PEOPLE that the pair had broken up in October 2017, citing scheduling challenges.

“He is on a press tour and she is working on her new album. And I think it’s timing,” said the source. “They’ve been all over the place. They have not seen each other in probably two months.”

Sarah Silverman & Michael Sheen

After beginning their relationship in February 2014, this couple made their official debut that May at the Met Gala.

Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen went on to date for nearly four more years, eventually breaking up in late 2017 over Christmas.

In 2018, Silverman appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where she discussed her past relationship with Sheen.

“He moved back to the U.K. and his life is really there and my life is really not there, but I love him to pieces,” she explained. “If he’s in town and we’re both single, we will make love.”

The 2003 Met Gala was the first red carpet event Kirsten Dunst and Jake Gyllenhaal attended together while dating from 2002 and 2004.

Dunst and Gyllenhaal got together after the actor's sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, introduced them. Maggie had co-starred with Dunst in 2003's Mona Lisa Smile.

In July 2004, however, it was confirmed that the pair had called it quits.

“Kirsten and Jake remain the best of friends. Details regarding when and why their romantic relationship stopped are not being provided, but suffice it to say it happened some time ago. They are still very close," Gyllenhaal’s rep confirmed to PEOPLE.
