Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender makes big change for season 2

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is set to make a big change for season two, with another change in showrunner.

Sources including The Hollywood Reporter have reported that Albert Kim, who was in charge for season one of the live-action adaptation of the animated series, is exiting the show.

Kim is staying on as an executive producer for the show but is handing over showrunner responsibilities to Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani for future seasons.

Kim’s intention was reportedly to lay the foundation for The Last Airbender in its first season, but given the long turnaround time for the show, he was ready to move on to new opportunities.

One of these new opportunities is that he has recently joined Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians as an executive producer for its second season.

Kim took over as showrunner back in 2020 from the creators of the original animated series, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

The pair were on board to guide the new adaptation but left as a result of creative differences with Netflix over the show’s vision.

In a statement on his website at the time, DiMartino wrote: "I realised I couldn’t control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded. So, I chose to leave the project.

"It was the hardest professional decision I’ve ever had to make, and certainly not one that I took lightly, but it was necessary for my happiness and creative integrity."

He continued: "And who knows? Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying. But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make."

Last month, The Last Airbender was renewed for two more seasons, with the streaming platform confirming in a social media post that "Aang’s journey continues".

Avatar: The Last Airbender is now available to stream on Netflix.
