Omar, a white tiger at the Singapore Zoo, died on Wednesday (7 June) at the age of 17, said Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS).

Despite receiving supportive care for the past few months, Omar had to be euthanised due to its deteriorating condition, said a media release by WRS.

Over the last three years, Omar’s keepers and veterinarians had been monitoring it closely for melanoma and degeneration of joints. “Recent reassessment had seen worsening of his health and the difficult decision was made to euthanise him to prevent further deterioration of his quality of life,” said WRS.

WRS also added that Omar will be greatly missed. “We will miss Omar, and our thoughts and appreciation go especially to his caregivers, who for so many years took such great care of him,” it said.

Born in Taman Safari, Indonesia, Omar arrived at the Singapore Zoo when it was just 19 months old. It would have turned 18 in September.

Singapore Zoo is now home to two white tigers named Pasha and Keysa, a brother-sister duo who are four years old.
