SINGAPORE — A preschool centre in Fengshan will be closed for two weeks, after a teacher there tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday (23 March) and other staff members reported feeling unwell.

The Nursery 2 teacher at the Fengshan PAP Community Foundation (PCF) Sparkletots preschool at Block 126 Bedok North Street 2 did not go to school while unwell, said the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) on Tuesday night.

She was last in school on Wednesday last week and developed symptoms two days later.

As a precaution, the Fengshan centre – located at 126 Bedok North Street 2 – was closed on Tuesday for cleaning and disinfection.

However, the ECDA said on Tuesday night that the agency and the Ministry of Health (MOH) have found a few staff reporting that they recently became unwell. They are undergoing tests for COVID-19, it added.

In light of the new developments, the agency has ordered the temporary closure of the centre from Tuesday to 7 April.

All preschool staff and children will be placed on quarantine issued by the MOH while contact tracing is ongoing, the ECDA added.

The Fengshan preschool will resume its programmes on 8 April.

“The centre has conducted a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the preschool premises, and is closely monitoring its staff and parents on the health of their children,” said the ECDA.

The agency said it will continue to monitor the situation closely, and work with the management, staff, parents and children at the centre to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all.

PCF Sparkletots is Singapore’s largest preschool operator and employer, operating over 360 preschools island-wide with an enrolment of over 40,000 children.

On Monday, Singapore’s tally of COVID-19 cases hit 509 after a single-day high of 54 new cases, 48 of which were imported and a large majority – 34 – had travel history to the UK.

All 48 imported cases except for one were returning Singaporeans, permanent residents or long-term pass holders.
