PEOPLE Is Teaming Up with Fotografiska for Its 50th Anniversary: Here's How You Can Join the Celebration
Along with the 'PEOPLE: Celebrating 50 Years' exhibit, three panels will take place on the making of the magazine
PEOPLE is celebrating its 50th anniversary in a big way.
Partnering with international photography museum Fotografiska New York, PEOPLE will be pulling photographs and stories from the depths of the archives — from well-loved human interest stories, to memorable covers and the “Sexiest Man Alive” franchise — for the upcoming exhibition, PEOPLE: Celebrating 50 Years.
“For 50 years, PEOPLE has chronicled the biggest moments in pop culture, and our photographs—combined with our unparalleled reporting—have given the world an up close and personal look not only at the world’s most high-profile names, but also the unseen stories that make up the fabric of this country,” Wendy Naugle, Editor-in-Chief of PEOPLE says.
“We are excited to show the brand’s evolution as we continue to innovate and lead the pop culture conversation on all platforms. I can’t wait for everyone to enjoy this immersive, multimedia experience at Fotografiska.”

The exhibition - which will be on display from May 10 through June 30, 2024 - will also include a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the 50th anniversary cover, featuring the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, Michael J. Fox and more.
Along with the exhibition, Fotografiska will be hosting a slate of programming to celebrate the magazine's milestone.

In Conversation: The Art of Iconic Celebrity Photographs
A story is not just told through words, but also the photographs that accompany it. Some photographs make history and are remembered for decades. For the first panel on Friday, May 10, PEOPLE photography director Ilana Schweber will talk to photographers Harry Benson CBE, Elinor Carucci, Phylicia J.L. Munn and Ben Watts about the importance of photos, how they capture the essence of their subjects and the making of some of PEOPLE’s most iconic photographs.
In Conversation: Styling Princess Diana

For Fotografiska’s second panel, held on Tuesday, May 21 and moderated by People Senior Royals Editor Erin Hill, the designer of Princess Diana’s wedding dress, Elizabeth Emanuel, will discuss how she made the dress - and a secret backup dress, a replica of which will be on display one night only during this event, on loan from The Princess & The Platypus Foundation & The Princess Diana Museum. Princess Diana’s hairdresser for over a decade, Richard Dalton, will also join the conversation, discussing how “shy Di” became a global fashion icon.
In Conversation: The Making of PEOPLE
The final panel, which will take place on Wednesday, May 22, will reunite former PEOPLE Editors-in-Chief Jess Cagle and Larry Hackett with current Editor-in-Chief Wendy Naugle, who will be moderating. The three editors will provide an inside look at PEOPLE throughout the years, including but not limited to their most unforgettable covers, their respective definitions of celebrity and how they believe it will change, the way photography impacts storytelling and their experiences being involved with PEOPLE and helping to shape the magazine into what it is today.
