‘Superstar K4’ Takes the Audition Battle to Australia

The first Australia preliminaries for Mnet’s upcoming season of Superstar K took place on July 15 in Sydney.

About 1,000 people swarmed to the spot to audition, proving how far across the world the show had reached.

Producers expected the queues to be full of Korean students, but they were surprised when there were more local foreigner contestants lined up than expected.

Producer Kim Tae Eun of Superstar K4 said, “Compared to the preliminaries in America, Japan and China, Australia had the biggest ratio of foreign participants. I believe it’s probably because it’s the first audition to take place after being taken directly from Korea to Australia.”

Because the preliminaries usually involve K-Pop missions, most contestants took a shot at singing K-Pop songs.

The single sung the most often was 2NE1’s Lonely, which was released in July 2011 with the group’s second mini album, and was explosively popular in Korea. Other than 2NE1’s hit song, other idol singers′s songs also popped up in front of the judges that day.

The producers said, “Perhaps because of the great popularity K-Pop has been garnering in the world, many foreigners applied with popular [Korean] idol singers’ songs. It was even hard to tell whether we were in Korea or Australia if we just listened to the songs. You can look forward to seeing a lot of skilled contestants because it’s an area where auditions have never been held before.”

PD Kim Tae Eun added, “The overseas preliminaries have gained more focus, drawing more contestants from various different countries. We’ll be able to compare the musical emotions and technique of each country on one stage. Superstar K4 has become more global, letting us look forward to more unique performances.”

Korean contestants in the history of Superstar K, such as Huh Gak or Ulala Session, were mostly loved for their powerful vocals, but contestants from America such as John Park or Two Months appealed to audiences with emotion and technique.

What characteristics will the Australian contestants show off for the upcoming fourth season of Superstar K?

Superstar K4 started its preliminaries in April in Jeju Island, and toured through eight cities in Korea and New York and L. in America. The first episode will air on August 17.
