Three teenagers who stole a motorcycle from a multi-storey carpark in Yishun for a joyride pleaded guilty to their crime before a district judge on Wednesday (31 May).

Khairul Amirul Yusof, Muhammad Nur Firhan Amran and Muhammad Qayyum Putera Zainal, all 18 years old, committed the act on 14 March at Block 342 Yishun Ring Road.

Khairul, who was studying at ITE Central, faced one charge each for theft of motor vehicle with common intention, theft of motor vehicle, riding while under the age of 18 and riding without insurance coverage.

Qayyum, also a former ITE Central student, was slapped with three charges: theft of motor vehicle with common intention, riding without valid license and riding without insurance coverage. Firhan, who was working at the Night Safari at the time, faced a single charge of theft of motor vehicle with common intention.

The court heard that the trio met at about midnight and decided to steal a motorcycle for a joyride. Qayyum and Khairul had earlier stolen a Honda motorcycle from the multi-storey car park for the same purpose.

However, at about midnight on 14 March they met Firhan at the same carpark and decided to take the same motorcycle for a second joyride.

Khairul then taught Firhan how to start a motorcycle without a key and Firhan proceeded to ride the motorcycle with Qayyum to Yishun Industrial Park A.

Khairul later joined the duo at the industrial park, where Qayyum took his turn to ride the Honda motorcycle. He then rode the motorcycle back to the Yishun carpark with Firhan as his pillion passenger.

Investigations revealed that the Honda motorcycle belonged to a resident of the area who lodged a police report after he found his vehicle was parked in a different lot from the one he had left it in.

District Judge May Mesenas told the trio off. “Your family members are here today. Do you really want your family members to be here today to look at you facing criminal charges?” she said.

She adjourned sentencing to 28 June and called for probation suitability reports for the trio.
