While crossing a traffic junction, she became so upset with a 14-year-old girl who had made eye contact with her that she poked the latter’s eye with a radio antenna.

In a separate incident, Adelynn Sajinee Asorgan also accused a random woman of being a prostitute before assaulting her.

At the State Courts on Tuesday (3 July), the 39-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntarily causing hurt to others. One count of causing mischief by throwing a person’s mobile phone to the floor, will be taken into consideration for her sentencing.

District Judge Eddy Tham called for a report to assess Adelynn’s suitability for a mandatory treatment order, which will let her undergo psychiatric treatment in lieu of a sentence. Previously diagnosed with schizophrenia, Adelynn had sought treatment at the Institute of Mental Health but stopped after one session.

The court heard that on 6 August last year, Adelynn was crossing a street in Woodlands when she passed a pair of siblings.

One of the two, a 14-year-old girl, made eye contact with Adelynn as she passed, prompting the latter to ask, “See what see?”

Adelynn then poked the girl’s eye with the antenna of a portable radio set that she was carrying before walking away.

The girl’s 18-year-old brother then called the police and followed Adelynn. The girl, who sought medical treatment, suffered tenderness over her right eye.

Earlier that year, on 22 February, 27-year-old Hemavathy Nithiyanandanher way on her way home from work when she was accosted by Adelynn, who was then working as a security guard.

Adelynn angrily asked Hemavathy if she was a prostitute several times, which the latter denied. Hemavathy noticed that Adelynn was holding a can of beer and smelled of alcohol at the time.

Adelynn then began assaulting Hemavathy, including slapping her and pulling her hair. She also poured beer into Hemavathy’s hair.

Hemavathy fell to the ground and dropped her mobile phone but was prevented from retrieving it by Adelynn, who pulled on the latter’s shirt. This was when Hemavathy started calling for help, attracting the attention of a passerby, who saw Adelynn sitting on Hemavathy.

The passerby also witnessed Adelynn punching Hemavathy’s face. Adelynn later stood up and kicked Hemavathy in her head and abdomen. Adelynn picked up Hemavathy’s mobile phone and threw it on the ground.

Hemavathy sought medical assistance the next day and was found to have sustained abrasions and tenderness on her arms and head.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Derek Ee described Adelynn’s the attacks as “serious” and “senseless”, noting that her condition was worsened by alcohol. He sought five weeks’ jail for Adelynn.

Nirmala Ravindran, who represented Adelynn, said her client was undergoing a divorce while battling her psychiatric condition at the time of the offences. Adelynn is also supporting her two children, aged 18 and 21, said the lawyer.

Adelynn will return to court on 31 July. For voluntarily causing hurt, she faces a jail term of up to two years and/or a maximum fine of $5,000 on each count.
