Learner motorists will get more time to obtain their driving or riding licences come December when the validity of their Provisional Driving Licenses (PDL) is extended from six months to two years.

The extension of the validity period of the PDL was announced in a news release sent on Thursday (30 November) by the Traffic Police.

Starting in December, learner motorists can also submit PDL applications electronically using their SingPass accounts, via http://www.police.gov.sg/e-services or the Police@SG mobile application.

The eyesight test for applicants, which was previously conducted by the Traffic Police, will now be conducted by the driving centres when the applicants enrol for driving lessons.

Existing road safety measures concerning PDL holders remain in place, said the Traffic Police. For example, PDL holders are only permitted to drive under the supervision of a licensed driving instructor.

Medical examinations for elderly learner motorists

From December, those aged 65 and above who wish to learn how to drive will also need to pass a medical examination before they apply for or renew their PDLs.

“As part of the examination, a medical practitioner will review the applicant’s medical history, vision, hearing and mobility. This will ensure that elderly learner motorists have the physical and mental fitness to operate vehicles safely on the roads,” said the Traffic Police.

Those who have already met the medical examination requirements to hold a Qualified Driving Licence of another vehicle class will not need to undergo this medical examination.
